Does your child have glue ear?

Having glue ear is like listening to the world with both fingers stuck in your ears

Glue ear or its medical term otitis media with effusion a painless condition in which thick, sticky fluid collects behind the eardrum.

The thick fluid prevents normal movement of the small bones in the middle ear that are necessary for hearing. Glue ear is common in children under six because of the nature of their Eustachian tubes, the tubes that connect the ears with the back of the throat.

Eustachian tubes are shorter and more horizontal in children under six which means that they get blocked more easily. Glue ear can occur in one or both ears and may be difficult to detect,

since it is not painful and doesn't cause symptoms of an ear infection like a temperature or pain etc. The fluid blocks the middle part of the ear and can cause impaired hearing. Glue ear is a common problem and is reported to affect approximately 1 in 10 children with boys commonly more affected than girls.

Bupa, (2009) suggest that it is estimated four out of five children will have had the condition at least once by the time they are four years old and that it generally is more likely to oocur in winter or spring.

Having glue ear is like listening to the world with both fingers stuck in your ears.

Children with glue ear cannot always hear everything that is said to them. As a result of this hearing impairment, your child may have problems paying attention or interacting with others, as well as with his or her speech and language.

Your child may also appear clumsy and have trouble with balance. But young children may not be able to explain the problem. Many become irritable and just want to be left alone. While it is estimated that about half of the cases of glue ear will resolve itself without treatment within 3 months it is important to note that any child who appears not to be hearing well should be examined by their GP. If left untreated glue ear may cause the following

• Temporary hearing difficulty or loss

• Contribute to a delay in speech development in young children

• Affect a child's behaviour and educational development

• In rare cases, cause permanent damage to hearing
