BBC WORKING LUNCH COMES TO LISBURN

Giving you help an advice with getting online

According to BBC2's Working Lunch programme, nearly 40% of people in the UK are afraid of the security risks of going online, and a fifth said they are simply 'not interested' in what the web has to offer.

To highlight this, the BBC’s big bus visited Lisburn on Wednesday 16th March offering advice on internet security, online child safety and help with the basics of getting online.

Many people attended the BBC’s big bus which boasts onboard computers connected to the internet via satellite, and a fully operational broadcast studio proving training, help and advice in media production.

The government has launched its new campaign Race Online 2012, which aims to get three million more people online by 2012. It fears that many people will be left behind as government services are increasingly provided through online means.

Basil Davidson from the Department of investment was on hand to give advice on how to operate the new government backed system of portable touch screen advice ports, which will be located in many public places over the coming months, giving people free access to the internet and all important government websites like www.nidirect.gov.uk.

As part of the road show BBC presenter Jenna Briggs linked up live with London for a 15 minute interview on the BBC’s working Lunch programme. Gay Sherry-Bingham manager of Atlas women’s centre, Lisburn, was there to explain how easy it is for people at any age to get online. More and more people are using the internet for everyday things like banking, booking holidays, sending emails, shopping, or chatting to family and friends, and it’s important that everyone knows the basics of getting online.”
